A Gift from God

A Dad’s Daily Word

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.  Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth.  Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them!  He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

Psalm 127:3-5

There are many ways to become a father.  Some come by it naturally, while others become fathers through foster care or adoption.  In my case, I became a father naturally and through the miracle of adoption.  I am lucky to have a wife who is my partner on this journey called parenting.  We both put in an extraordinary amount of work to raise our children; however, we do have separate and very distinctive roles.  As a Dad, my primary roles are to teach my son to be the man God intends for him to be and to be a role model in teaching my daughters how they should expect to be treated by a man.  Both roles are ones that only I as a Dad can fill.  The good news is that God not only allows me to teach but also to continue to learn.  I am fortunate in that my experiences as a Dad have also caused me to grow in other areas of my life.  I have been able to accomplish so much more than I ever anticipated because I accepted the responsibility of being a father.

Becoming a father is not a burden but a blessing.  It allowed me to become the leader that I always aspired to be.  Being a father made me realize that life is not always about what you get but what you can give.  If you are an expectant Dad, congratulations.  God has given you an incredible gift.  He has allowed you to become a servant leader.  Remember, you have been blessed by God so that you may, in turn, become a blessing to your child.

A prayer for today:  Father God, thank You for this most precious gift.  May You lead me and guide me in raising this child so that I may become the servant leader that You have prepared me to be.  I pray this prayer in Jesus name, Amen.
